Gothic Period

The Gothic Period began at the height of the Middle Ages when Europe was putting the memory of the "Dark Ages" behind it and moving into a radiant new era of prosperity and confidence.

Pale skin was a sign of nobility and as economic and artistic changes occurred an outward show of wealth was encouraged. 

Edward III set-up an English court in France exposing Europeans to French fashion.
